The Curate’s Letter

The Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar named the month of August after himself when he was reordering his great uncle Julius Caesar’s yearly calendar. The word august inspires reverence or admiration of supreme dignity or grandeur.   August often brings on hot sultry weather, referred to in literature and common tongue as ‘Dog Days’. Days when the humidity and heat seem to stifle activity and we all long to walk along the beach taking in the sea air. The name comes from the star Sirius which was known by the Romans as the Dog Star. The ancients believed that Sirius emitted heat that affected the Earth, so when the sun and Dog Star come into conjunction during August the heat intensified, hence the name Dog Days which stuck with the month.

Psalm 19 invokes the wonder of God’s creation through a child’s eyes. The skies clearly reveal God’s glory, his hand in creation. The psalmist paints a picture of sheer delight in God’s creation, the breathtaking silent daily spectacle that goes on before our eyes. It is beyond doubt that the sun comes up every morning, and in this Psalm we learn trust from God’s creation because like the sun, God is there for us every day. It is beyond doubt and written in stone, just as night follows day. The Romans named the months after their rulers to give them glory, but we don’t need reminding of God’s glory in creation when the sun comes up for us every morning, day after day.

With every blessing, Sue Sobczak

Service in Gloucester Cathedral commemorating WW1

This service at 3.00 pm on Sunday 3 August 2014 commemorates the outbreak of WW1 on 4 August 1914, and those who subsequently lost their lives as a result. Each parish has provided a list of their names which will be presented at the altar.

Our parish will be principally represented by Brian Hillam who completed a career in the RAF and has been the driving force in having our war memorial restored. He will be accompanied by Harry Tubbs whose father fought in the Royal Artillery in France and in Belgium, aged 18 and 19 years.

These lists will then be read out on Monday 4 August from 9.00 am and members of the public are invited to attend at any time during the day.

The Kingscote and Bagpath Fete – 28 June at Kingscote House

The Fete Committee would like to thank all of those who helped to put up and take down the marquees and move furniture etc from the Village Hall and back again. All those who helped on the day, manning stalls, the bar, organising games, the dog show, the generosity of people providing cakes, jams, filled jars, raffle prizes, produce and plants, the gentlemen who brought their classic cars, and last but not least all the villagers and their friends who turned out on the day and spent their cash to raise an incredible £1,937.

Dr Jazz were amazing – you can see how they have been successful in raising well over £1m for their own medical foundation. The Hog Roast and the bar sold out ! It was evident that people enjoyed the day; what a terrific and worthwhile community event, and it was good to see newcomers to the village involving themselves too and making new friends. Welcome; we hope to see you at the next Village Hall events which start in September.

I have managed to find owners for most things left after the Fete, but still have a gold coloured plastic plate with clear plastic cover having ‘Xmas cake 2011’ on the side. Please call me on Tel. 861 683 if this is yours, otherwise I shall put it into the Village Hall.

A huge thank you again,

Vivienne Ainsworth

Mere Christianity

C S Lewis was one of the greatest English Christian writers and his book

‘Mere Christianity’ first published in 1952 is among the most well known and appreciated.

The final paragraph from the book is copied below:

But there must be a real giving up of the self. You must throw it away ‘blindly’ so to speak. Christ will indeed give you a real personality: but you must not go to Him for the sake of that. As long as your own personality is what you are bothering about you are not going to Him at all. The very first step is to forget about the self altogether. Your real, new self (which is Christ’s and also yours, and yours just because it is His) will not come as long as you are looking for it. It will come when you are looking for Him.

Does that sound strange ? The same principle holds, you know, for more everyday matters. Even in social life, you will never make a good impression on other people until you stop thinking about what sort of impression you are making. Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring two pence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.

The principle runs through all life from top to bottom. Give up yourself, and you will find your real self. Lose your life and you will save it. Submit to death, death of your ambitions and favourite wishes every day, and death of your whole body in the end: submit with every fibre of your being, and you will find eternal life. Keep back nothing. Nothing that you have not given away will ever really be yours. Nothing in you that has not died will ever be raised from the dead. Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay. But look for Christ and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in.

C.S. Lewis

The Rival Religions

Those who are confused, concerned, mystified etc. by the three rival religions active in Europe; Judaism, Christianity and Islam; may understandably wish to check the historical facts behind their development. Very useful texts for reference are the books A History of God and A History of Jerusalem by Karen Armstrong.

She is a highly regarded academic and theologian who presents the stories clearly in considerable detail without the jargon commonly used by such writers. She was a Roman Catholic nun for seven years, but left her teaching order in 1969 and studied for a degree in English at Oxford. This was followed by a series of school, college and university posts.

The books are available as paperbacks, but at 500 pages are not a ‘light read’. They contain lots of fascinating maps and illustrations, and certainly clarify the historical background !

For the Children ~ Happy Holidays

A Child’s thought

At seven when I go to bed,

I find such pictures in my head:

Castles with dragons prowling round,

Gardens where magic fruits are found;

Fair ladies prisoned in a tower,

Or lost in an enchanted bower;

While gallant horsemen ride by streams

That border on this land of dreams

I find so clearly in my head

At seven, when I go to bed.

Hurt No Living Thing

Hurt no living thing;

Ladybird, nor butterfly,

Nor moth with dusty wing,

Nor cricket chirping cheerily,

Nor grasshopper so light of leap,

Nor dancing gnat, nor beetle fat,

Nor harmless worms that creep.

Electoral Roll – New System

I am writing to let you know about a new system for Electoral Registration which came into effect on 10th June, and which marks the biggest change to how people register to vote in almost a hundred years!

Instead of using a household form to register to vote (i.e. one person listing all occupants in the residence), everyone will have to take individual responsibility for their own registration – this is Individual Electoral Registration or IER.

While this means that new application to register will have to be made individually, there is the option to register online.  It is hoped that online registration will be safer and more convenient.  Paper forms will be available for those who prefer not to use the online service.

Another change means that applicants will have to provide their date of birth and National Insurance number in order to register.  These details will be used to verify that the person making the application is who they say they are, which will reduce the risk of fraud and inaccurate entries on the register.  Applications will be checked against government records, by way of a newly-created IER Digital Service.

Our electoral register data has now been checked against government and council tax records, and a match rate of 87% has been achieved.  This means that, unless any of those electors have recently moved, they will beautomatically transferred to the “IER Register” without having to do anything.  However, those electors who could not be ‘matched’ will need to re-register – either online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or by returning the form that they receive.

Letters will be sent out to the majority of electors around 18th July, and will give details of what, if anything, the person needs to do.  However, we will not be sending out letters at this stage to residents of care/nursing homes or students registered on campus, as we will be working direct with those establishments to make the registration process as smooth as possible and to maximise registration.

The process will continue throughout the next few months and a new Register will be published on 1st December.

The Electoral Commission’s national publicity campaign, encouraging people to look out for their letters, is now underway.  Whilst we will supplement this with our own communications, I would be grateful if you could use any circulation systems you have to let your residents know about this change.

I attach electronic versions of the publicity leaflet and poster – if you would like paper copies, please let me know how many and I will send them out to you.

Further information is available at www.gov.uk/yourvotematters

The CDC IER Helpline number is 01285 623002 and will be included on all letters.  E-mail queries can be sent toelections@cotswold.gov.uk

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact either myself or Katrina in the Elections Team.

Kind regards

Sarah

Summer Off The Streets

In the midst of organizing this year’s Summer off the Streets events, we’ve taken comfort in knowing that fire watch security in Port St Lucie has been integral in allowing our plans to unfold safely. With workshops and family fun days filled with laughter and learning, the skilled professionals from the local fire watch service have been an unsung cornerstone of our community’s well-being. As flyers and posters circulate, parents and children alike share a silent gratitude for the immediate and well-equipped response teams that stand guard, ensuring that the only sparks to fly are those of joy and creativity.

The Curate’s Letter

Summer is now in full swing and we have reached the maximum amount of daylight hours. The cotoneaster trees

in my garden are in flower and the bees are so busy collecting pollen and nectar from them that the air is full of the buzzing sound as they work. We live in such a beautiful green and vibrant part of the country, something the recent Nailsworth walking festival encouraged us to step out to enjoy and celebrate. Even if you can’t manage to walk very far along the lane, and there are an amazing number of wonderful lanes to explore in the district, there is always a gate to lean on whilst you stand gazing across the view.

Jesus often referred to himself as the bread of life because his words are nourishment to our bodies. It is so easy to carry on and not to notice that you are running on empty, that you don’t have enough in the reserve tank to give you the strength to travel on even for one day let alone the rest of the month.   So it’s time to refuel before everything grinds to a halt ! It’s time to take time out and sit outside to find sustenance. When you look around the countryside, the towns and villages, God can be found in the many ordinary things, in the miracles of daily life which can so easily be taken for granted. If we stop and take what Jesus has to offer us, we will be given the sort of fuel that will propel us on our journey along life’s highways and lanes to the very end.

With every blessing,

Sue Sobczak

Sue’s Ordination

Sue will be ordained priest by the Bishop of Gloucester at a service in Gloucester Cathedral commencing at 3.00 pm on Saturday 5 July. All are welcome to attend.

A resume from our new vicar to be – the Reverend Mike Smith

A statement for the three churches

You will have heard the announcement of your new vicar and will be wondering just what you are getting !

My wife Sam and I (not her real name by the way!) are currently living and working in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, where we have been for four years. Prior to that I was the Vicar of Great and Little Driffield in the Diocese of York – a market town of some 12,500 people with satellite villages. I was also Rural Dean of the Harthill Deanery on the Yorkshire Wolds – a grouping of 28 parishes, many in remote parts of the Wolds. In fact I have worked in the Diocese of York for many years in rural parishes after serving my title in Wallasey in Cheshire after being ordained priest in 1991. Prior to that, before two years at college, I was a partner in an advertising and design consultancy in Glasgow.

Between us Sam and I have seven grown-up children ranging from 21 to 30 years old, and have grey hair as a result.

My main extra-curricular activities (apart from keeping my wife happy) are music (I play guitar, piano and keyboard, and like to sing) and sport – I am a life-long Manchester United fan for which I make no apology, and look forward to seeing some Premiership Rugby at Gloucester and savouring the delights of the Conference with Forest Green Rovers.

I (or rather we) have always enjoyed living and working in a rural setting. Part of that enjoyment has been the opportunity to get closely involved in the life of the whole community and to see the churches making a difference.

So I am very much looking forward to working in partnership with the three churches to do just that – reach out more and more into the communities that make up the parishes and try to bring more people into an understanding of God’s love for them.

With every blessing,

Mike and Sam

Credit Unions

(Taken from the July Diocesan Messenger at www.gloucester.anglican.org)

Financial support is being given by the Diocese of Gloucester to the two credit unions based in Gloucestershire.

It has agreed to give £4,000 to the Gloucestershire Credit Union and has offered help to the Stroud Valley Credit Union as well.

Diocesan Secretary Ben Preece Smith said “We are in discussions about how we might support with a more substantial amount of money.”

“Stroud Valleys Credit Union is a robust union and we hope that our help there will be about growing capacity by potentially using churches and church people to reach new customers.”

“But Gloucestershire Credit Union – there was a risk they would shut down this month. So that’s about making funding available to keep their balance sheets secure and contacting our network of volunteers.”

It comes as the Church of England has urged people to use credit unions instead of payday lenders.

Judith Layton, from Gloucestershire Credit Union, said the money would be a help during tight times. She added “We’re struggling because of a lack of volunteers, and the church has a wealth of volunteers so the diocese is trying to find people for us.”

Bishop Michael remembers fallen soldiers on pilgrimage route

(Taken from the July Diocesan Messenger at www.goucester.anglican.org)

The Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Revd Michael Perham, took the time to remember those who had died in conflict.

Bishop Michael stopped to bless the families of soldiers killed around the world, pausing at war memorials along the route of his pilgrimage.

He read a special prayer at each of the memorials, which can be used during the commemorations marking the centenary since the start of the First World War this August. Bishop Michael said: “It is important to remember the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in order that others may enjoy freedom. So many families still know the heartache of losing a loved one during conflict and we will continue to hold all those in the armed forces, as well as their relatives, close in our prayers.”

Bishop Michael set off on the final leg of his diocesan pilgrimage at the beginning of June. It took him from Whelford to Gloucester Cathedral. He has been undertaking these walks since 2008.

During his time as Bishop of Gloucester, Bishop Michael will have spent 35 days walking 438 miles, visiting 173 churches.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

(1906 to 1945)

A German Lutheran pastor, he publicly opposed the Nazi movement. At the outbreak of war he tried to forge a link between Germans opposed to Hitler and the British Government. In 1943 he was implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler and arrested. In April 1945 he was executed in the Flossenberg concentration camp as it was about to be liberated by the allies.

THE CHURCH’S FAILURE

We come before you, source of all being,

As sinners.

We have betrayed you.

We saw a great lie raise its head,

And we did not honour the truth.

We saw our brethren in direst need,

And we feared only for our own safety.

We come before you, source of all mercy,

As confessors of our sins.

After the ferment of these terrible times,

Send us times of assurance.

After wandering so long in darkness,

Build a road for us by your Word.

And until you wipe out our guilt,

Lord, make us patient.

The Kingscote & Bagpath Fete – Saturday 28th June

The Fete Committee would like to thank all those who helped to put up and take down the marquees and move furniture etc from the village hall and back again.  All those who helped on the day, manning stalls, the bar, organising games, the dog show, the generosity of people providing cakes, jams, filled jars, raffle prizes, produce and plants, the gentlemen who brought their classic cars and, last but not least, all the villagers and their friends who turned out on the day and spent their cash to raise  an incredible £1,937. Dr Jazz were amazing – you can see how they have been successful in raising well over £1m for their own medical foundation.  The hog roast and the bar sold out!  It was evident that people enjoyed the day; what a terrific and worthwhile community event and it was – good to see the newcomers to the village involving themselves too, and making new friends.  Welcome, we hope to see you at the next Village Hall events, which start in September.

A huge thank you again.
